The vast majority of Warehouse Insight features and the broader Insight Works product suite are compatible with a Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Essentials license. Customers and partners do not need to upgrade to Premium licensing to access core warehouse management, shipping, inventory planning, or quality inspection functionality. Premium licensing becomes relevant only when manufacturing-specific modules within Business Central itself are in scope.
What Works with Essentials
Everything covered under warehouse management — including barcode scanning with Warehouse Insight or WMS Express, receiving and put-away, picking and shipping, inventory counting, License Plating, bin movements, the Order Fulfillment Worksheet, Dynamic Ship, Advanced Inventory Count, and the free companion apps such as the Enhanced Planning Worksheet, Enhanced Forecasting Worksheet, and Graphical Scheduler — operates within a Business Central Essentials license. The Quality Inspector module from Insight Works is also compatible with Essentials. Shipping integrations through Dynamic Ship and its carrier connectors similarly require no Premium upgrade.
What Requires Premium
Premium licensing from Microsoft is required for the manufacturing and service management modules built natively into Business Central, including production orders, manufacturing BOMs, capacity planning, and service management. If a customer is using Warehouse Insight’s production-facing capabilities — such as the Production Order Consumption and Output modules on handheld devices — they will need Premium licensing on the Business Central side to access those underlying manufacturing features. Shop Floor Insight, Insight Works’ dedicated manufacturing execution product, similarly requires a Premium license because it relies on Business Central’s native manufacturing foundation.
Device Licensing
For warehouse employees who use a shared handheld device, Microsoft offers a Device license that is separate from the full named user Essentials or Premium license. Device licenses are concurrent, meaning if ten employees share five devices, only five device licenses are required. A named user who already holds a full Business Central license — such as a warehouse supervisor — can use that existing license on a handheld device without any additional Microsoft license being required. This makes it practical to support a mixed environment where some users have full licenses and others work on shared devices.
A Note on Free Insight Works Apps
Several Insight Works apps, including WMS Express, the Enhanced Planning Worksheet, the Enhanced Forecasting Worksheet, the Graphical Scheduler, and Order Ship Express, are available at no cost and install on top of any Essentials or Premium environment. These apps do not change the Microsoft licensing requirement, and their functionality is available regardless of whether the customer is on Essentials or Premium.
Relevant Tools
Warehouse Insight is the full-featured handheld WMS from Insight Works and works with Business Central Essentials. WMS Express is the free, lighter-weight alternative that also operates within an Essentials license. Shop Floor Insight, for more comprehensive manufacturing execution, requires a Premium license on the Business Central side. In summary, for any project focused on warehouse management, shipping, planning, or inventory operations, Business Central Essentials is sufficient. Premium licensing is relevant only when the engagement includes manufacturing production orders or service management functionality within Business Central itself.
