Can WMS Express and Warehouse Insight run on an iPad or other iOS device?

Many businesses already own iPads, so it is natural to ask whether they can double as warehouse scanners. For barcoding in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central with WMS Express or Warehouse Insight, the answer is no. There is no iOS support for either app; they run on Android and Windows only.

Why Android is the native platform

The reason is the hardware market. Effectively every handheld device you buy today for warehouse work, proof of delivery, and similar jobs runs Android. Building for Android means WMS Express and Warehouse Insight run on the devices warehouses actually buy for scanning.

You can use any style of Android device you like: purpose-built handheld computers, tablets, or a regular Android phone. On a phone, the camera works as the scanner, which is useful for testing and light use.

Where Windows fits

Windows is the second supported platform. It works well if you run a Surface Pro or a similar Windows device in the warehouse. It is also useful when you run one of the additional applications on Windows, such as Counter Sales for point of sale. The Windows app looks and works the same as the handheld version, so it is also handy for training and testing.

If you are evaluating before buying hardware, you can also run the Android app in an Android emulator on a Windows computer, or use a regular Android phone with its camera as the scanner, and move to dedicated devices later.

Device compatibility varies by model, so contact Insight Works if you want to confirm a specific device before you buy.

Managing your devices

If you get your devices from Insight Works, mobile device management is included, so you can manage all of your devices centrally and remotely.

What the apps do on those devices

WMS Express handles the four key warehouse functions: receiving, picking, bin movements, and inventory counts. It is limited to five concurrent licenses, and a device only counts as in use while it is communicating with Business Central. Warehouse Insight covers pretty much anything you need in the warehouse, including inventory and production.
