Insight Works uses 42Gears as its MDM platform for managing Android devices running Warehouse Insight. 42Gears is a commercial MDM solution that supports device provisioning, remote access, kiosk mode, application management, and device location tracking — all of the capabilities that the Insight Works MDM offering provides to customers.
The Tenant-Per-Customer Model
A key aspect of how Insight Works has structured its MDM offering is that each customer receives their own dedicated tenant within the 42Gears platform rather than sharing a multi-tenant environment with other customers. This means every customer has their own isolated management environment with their own login credentials. Customers who want to take an active role in managing their devices can be given administrator access to their tenant, allowing them to add additional devices, manage configurations, view device locations, and purchase additional licenses for their tenant if needed. This also means that if a customer wants to use their 42Gears tenant for devices beyond their Warehouse Insight scanners — such as laptops or other company hardware — that is possible within their environment.
How Provisioning Works
When a device is enrolled in the 42Gears-based MDM service, Insight Works handles all of the initial configuration work on the back end. The customer or partner receives a barcode, and scanning that barcode on the device initiates the provisioning process. Within a few minutes the device is fully configured and ready for use with Warehouse Insight. This eliminates the need to manually install the APK, enter connection settings, and configure scanner intent settings on each individual device.
Ongoing Device Management
Once devices are enrolled, the MDM console provides centralized visibility into the entire fleet. Administrators can see all enrolled devices, monitor their status, and initiate a remote connection to any device. This remote access capability is useful for troubleshooting issues without requiring a technician to be physically present. Kiosk mode can also be configured through MDM to lock the device down to only the applications and settings that warehouse employees need, reducing the risk of unauthorized changes or accidental misconfiguration.
Why 42Gears
Insight Works evaluated multiple MDM platforms before selecting 42Gears as its preferred solution. While other platforms such as SOTI are also commonly used in the industry and are reasonable choices, the per-customer tenant model that 42Gears supports fit the Insight Works deployment model better. SOTI’s architecture makes it more difficult to provide each customer with a fully isolated, self-managed tenant, whereas 42Gears supports that approach natively. This structural difference was a determining factor in the platform selection.
Relevant Tools
Warehouse Insight is the full-featured WMS from Insight Works that the MDM service is designed to support. WMS Express, the free entry-level warehouse management solution, can also be managed through the same MDM offering, making the service applicable across both product tiers. In summary, Insight Works uses 42Gears as its MDM platform, configured so that every customer has their own dedicated tenant with full administrative access and complete separation from other customers’ device environments.
