An empty pick bin in Business Central does not have to stop the pick. Warehouse Insight lets the picker find the item in another bin and change the pick line. It installs as an extension to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, and resellers often call it a warehouse add-on.
What happens when a picker reaches an empty pick bin?
The picker stays on the pick and finds the stock from the handheld. Warehouse Insight follows the standard scan sequence: scan the bin, scan the item, then confirm the quantity. When the bin is empty, there is nothing to scan, so the picker needs another source for that line.
Without a scanner, this moment usually means a walk back to a desk. Someone checks bin contents in Business Central and writes a new bin on the ticket. Then the picker heads out again. On the handheld, the lookup and the change happen at the shelf.
Why does Business Central send pickers to an empty pick bin?
Business Central suggests the bin from its own records, and the shelf does not always match. Pick lines come from bin contents, default bins, or bin ranking, depending on how the location is set up. If stock was moved without a recorded transaction, the record still points to the old bin.
Other causes are just as ordinary. A count variance has not been posted yet. A put-away went to a different bin than planned. A pallet was pulled for another order outside the system. In each case the pick is correct for the data. The data is what needs attention.
How does a picker find stock in another bin?
From the pick line, the picker opens an item inquiry for that item. The Locate Item feature lists each bin that holds the item. Each bin shows quantity on hand, quantity on open picks and put-aways, and quantity available to take.
The inquiry can sit in the pick screen menu, one tap or one hotkey away. For lot-tracked items, the picker can filter the list to a specific lot. Checking bin quantities from a handheld covers the bin side of this lookup in more detail.
Can scanning a different bin update the pick line?
Not on its own, and that is deliberate. Scan a bin that is not on the pick document, and Warehouse Insight reports no matching line. A stray scan cannot quietly redirect the pick. To take the item from another bin, the picker uses the Change Bin action:
- The picker highlights the pick line for the empty bin.
- The picker opens the menu and chooses Change Bin.
- The picker scans or types the new bin code.
- Business Central runs its normal validations on the new bin before the line updates.
- The picker scans the item in the new bin and confirms the quantity.
If the new bin holds only part of the quantity, Split Line handles the rest. Microsoft’s documentation names the same tool. It says to “use the Split Line action on the Lines FastTab.” The Warehouse Insight picking page notes that line splitting can be manual or automatic.
Can supervisors block bin overrides?
Yes. The menu actions on each Warehouse Insight screen are configured inside Business Central. A supervisor decides whether pickers see Change Bin and Split Line at all. A location that wants every exception to go through the office can remove those actions from the pick menu.
The same configuration approach applies to item tracking. If the order names a lot number, you can require the picker to take that exact lot. Some bins are also off limits by design. Business Central does not direct picks to blocked or dedicated bins, so stock held for quality review stays put.
How do you stop an empty pick bin from shorting the next picker?
Have pickers choose a new bin by quantity available to take, not quantity on hand. Business Central already accounts for work in progress. According to Microsoft, the pickable quantity “excludes quantities that are in blocked or dedicated bins, or items that are being picked in warehouse pick documents.”
Warehouse Insight shows that same split on the handheld. A bin may hold 40 units with 30 already on another open pick. The picker sees only 10 available and takes from somewhere else. Because each scan updates Business Central in real time, the next picker sees current numbers too. For two people on one document, see whether two workers can pick the same pick document.
| Situation at the bin | Action on the handheld | Result in Business Central |
|---|---|---|
| Bin is empty, stock is in one other bin | Change Bin | The pick line takes from the new bin |
| Bin holds part of the quantity | Split Line | One line per bin, each with its own quantity |
| Picker is unsure where stock is | Item inquiry | Nothing changes until the picker acts |
Frequently asked questions about an empty pick bin
Does changing the bin on the handheld update Business Central?
Yes. The change applies to the pick document in Business Central as soon as it is confirmed. The office sees the new bin on the line without any rekeying.
Is Change Bin a scanner app feature or a Business Central feature?
Both. Change Bin and Split Line are Business Central functions on pick lines. The Warehouse Insight app mirrors them on the handheld, so the same rules and validations apply.
What should happen after a picker finds an empty pick bin?
The record and the shelf disagree, so the bin is worth a count. With an unplanned inventory count, a worker scans the bin, scans what is there, and enters the quantity. That brings Business Central back in line before the next pick arrives.
