Key Capabilities
Component consumption against production order BOMs. Workers open the consumption application on their device, select the production order, and scan components as they consume them. The device displays the full BOM for the selected order. Workers scan the bin, scan the item, and enter the quantity consumed. Business Central validates each scan in real time.
Configurable BOM enforcement. Administrators set the BOM enforcement level in Business Central’s device configuration. No Enforcement allows workers to consume any item in any quantity. Enforce Item restricts consumption to BOM items only, preventing workers from recording components not on the order. Enforce Quantity prevents over-consumption of any BOM item. Each option applies per device configuration.
Lot and serial number consumption. Workers record lot and serial numbers during the consumption workflow. The device prompts for tracking information when a tracked component is scanned. If the lot number appears in the component barcode, the device captures it automatically. Workers confirm rather than type.
Consumption entry staging. Consumption entries are recorded in a staging table on the device and transferred to Business Central’s consumption journal for review before posting. Operations that require supervisor review before consumption posts to the ledger use the transfer workflow. Operations that post immediately set the Allow Post option in the device configuration, and workers post directly from the device.
Production order output recording. Workers open the output application, select the production order, select the operation to output against, and enter the quantity produced. For multi-operation routings, workers record output for each operation to track production progress through the routing. Only the final operation creates finished goods inventory in Business Central.
Auto-generation of lot and serial numbers at output. For finished goods requiring lot or serial tracking, the device auto-generates the appropriate tracking number when the worker enters the output quantity. Workers confirm the generated number or enter a specific number if required. Auto-generation requires the item to have a number series configured in Business Central.
Automatic label printing at output. Workers print item barcode labels at the moment of output from the device. The Auto Print on Output option in device configuration triggers the label report when the worker closes the quantity dialog. The device prompts for the number of labels to print during the output quantity step. Labels print to any BC-configured printer on the production floor.
License plate building during output. Workers build license plates for finished goods during the output process using the Start and Stop License Plate menu actions in the output application. Finished goods pallets or boxes build up during output recording and carry a tracked barcode label for movement, storage, and shipping.
How Production Order Management Works in Warehouse Insight
How Production Order Consumption Works
Workers open the consumption application from the Warehouse Insight main menu and select or scan the production order they are working on. The device displays the production order BOM with all component lines. Workers follow the standard scan sequence: scan the bin the component ships from, scan the item, enter the quantity consumed and any lot or serial tracking information. The device records the entry to the consumption staging table.
When consumption recording is complete, workers post directly from the device if the Allow Post option is enabled in their device configuration. The device transfers the consumption entries to Business Central’s consumption journal and posts. For operations using a staged review process, a supervisor or planner transfers the consumption entries from the staging table to the consumption journal in Business Central and reviews before posting.
The Show Usage menu option within the consumption application lets workers view all consumption entries recorded against the current order and modify or delete individual entries before they post.
How Production Order Output Works
Workers open the output application and select the production order to output against. The device displays the order’s routing operations. Workers select the operation they completed, press Output, and enter the quantity produced and any item tracking information. For items with auto-generated lot or serial enabled, the device automatically pre-fills the tracking number.
If Auto Print on Output is enabled, the label quantity dialog appears during the output entry. Workers confirm the quantity to output and the number of labels to print. The output posts to Business Central and the labels print to the configured printer simultaneously.
For multi-operation routings, workers record output against each operation as production progresses. Operations prior to the last in the routing track production progress without creating finished goods inventory. The final operation creates the finished goods inventory entry in Business Central.
Why Real-Time Recording Outperforms Offline Production Tracking
Some WMS solutions promote offline production recording as a feature, arguing that production floors benefit from working disconnected and syncing later. The argument overlooks the core value of real-time validation.
When a worker consumes a component, Business Central immediately validates the scan; errors surface immediately. Wrong component, wrong lot, quantity exceeding BOM limits — the device flags the problem before the worker moves on. When consumption records are offline and sync later, those same errors surface at journal review, after the production run is complete and the materials have already been used. Correcting them requires backtracking recorded entries against physical reality.
Warehouse Insight keeps production recording online by default. Real-time feedback catches errors when they are still correctable. Offline mode is available for genuine connectivity emergencies, not as a workflow design choice.
When to Consider Shop Floor Insight
Warehouse Insight handles the material handling side of production: component consumption, finished goods output, lot and serial tracking, and label printing. For operations that need more robust shop floor management — detailed routing management, capacity planning, operator time tracking, machine integration, or production scheduling — Shop Floor Insight extends these capabilities without replacing Warehouse Insight. Both products come from Insight Works and work within the same Business Central environment, so as operations grow into more complex production requirements, Shop Floor Insight can be added without switching WMS products or re-implementing their warehouse workflows.
