When production slips, the dates that matter to the customer are on the sales order. Planners using an automated scheduler naturally want to know whether a new production schedule will flow through to those sales order dates on its own. For manufacturers running Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central with MxAPS, the answer is that MxAPS updates production and leaves the sales order to you.
What MxAPS changes
MxAPS is automated production scheduling. It generates a schedule you can actually execute on the shop floor, looking at labor, material, floor space, and any other constraints you set up. When it builds that schedule, it reschedules all of the dates on the production order for you.
What MxAPS does not change
MxAPS typically won’t touch the sales order. If a sales order has a reservation against a production order and the new schedule moves that production order, MxAPS does not automatically update the sales order dates to match.
MxAPS has several options for handling that situation. One of them is to retain the reservation even though it is now in a broken state: production ends after the sales order is supposed to ship. In that case, you will have a warning and the information that this is happening, but the sales order dates stay as they are.
Why that matters for planners and customer service
Keeping the sales order dates unchanged means nobody’s promise date moves without a person deciding it should. The warning tells the team which orders are at risk, so customer service or sales can decide whether to contact the customer, expedite production, or adjust the order. The scheduling system surfaces the problem; the business decides what to promise.
How this compares with manual scheduling
If you schedule manually with Graphical Scheduler instead, each drag and drop uses standard Business Central logic. Moving an operation is the same as changing its starting or ending time on the production order, and a conflicting reservation produces the same reservation error you would see in Business Central. MxAPS, by contrast, manages all of your scheduling whether or not there are reservations against the orders.
Where to learn more
The MxAPS website, SchedulingForDynamics.com, has more information, videos, and links to knowledge base articles that describe this behavior in detail. Your Business Central partner can also set up a demo so you can see how MxAPS handles reservations and late production in your own scenarios.
Relevant Tools
MxAPS is the main tool for this question: automated production scheduling that reschedules production order dates, manages reservations, and warns you when production will finish after the sales order is due to ship.
Graphical Scheduler gives planners a visual, drag-and-drop view of production orders for manual adjustments using standard Business Central behavior.
The Enhanced Planning Pack handles the planning side before scheduling begins, including purchase and production planning, so the orders MxAPS schedules are based on a sound plan.
