Question
Can Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central’s quality inspection process handle passing only a portion of a lot?
Partial Lot Passing Not Supported Natively
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central does not natively support passing only a portion of a lot within its quality inspection workflows. Quality results and dispositions in standard BC apply to entire lot or serial numbers as a whole. The Quality Inspector app extends Business Central by enabling detailed inspection management, but passing portions of a lot remains a process consideration rather than a built-in feature.
Quality Inspection Lot Processing and Disposition Details
In native Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, quality inspections and testing are performed against whole lot or serial numbers. The system treats the lot as a single unit, and quality pass or fail results apply to the entire lot. This design aligns with standard inventory tracking concepts where lot numbers represent discrete inventory batches.
This limitation exists because Business Central’s inventory and quality modules are structured around lot-level control rather than sub-lot granularity. Lot splitting or partial disposition typically requires manual intervention or external processes.
The Quality Inspector app enhances Business Central by providing configurable inspection templates, sampling methods, grading, and workflow automation to better align quality processes with operational needs. While the app supports complex sampling and testing rules within lots, it does not directly support marking only a portion of a lot as passed within its standard workflows.
Instead, organizations handle partial lot acceptance through sampling plans and disposition processes—such as quarantine or return of failed units—while passing the remaining inventory. These outcomes are managed as inventory movements or adjustments using Business Central’s stock and quality features in combination with Quality Inspector’s inspection results.
The app’s workflow and automation capabilities, including Power Automate integration, allow for greater control over how inspections trigger inventory movements or block lot usage. However, full partial-lot pass capability depends on specific setup and usage practices rather than inherent system functionality.
If item tracking with lot or serial numbers is not configured, quality inspection functionality cannot manage lot-level results. Partial lot passing may require manual lot splits or adjustments outside of standard inspection workflows. Custom configurations or workflows may be needed to support complex partial acceptance scenarios.
