The chain runs in four steps: receive goods onto a license plate on the handheld, pick to a license plate when the order is released, then open the shipment in the Dynamic Ship Package Worksheet, where picked and registered lines already appear as packed. Nothing is re-entered along the way, which is the point of the license plate. Each step belongs to a different app, and it is worth knowing which.
Receiving and Movement
A license plate is a single identifier for a pallet, box, crate, or container that already knows the items, lots or serial numbers, quantities, and location it contains. At receiving, a worker creates the license plate on a handheld device and prints its barcode label there, then moves and stores the unit with a single scan rather than rescanning contents at each step. License plates handle genuinely mixed contents, including different items and different lot or serial numbers in one unit, and license plates can be nested so a pallet can contain cartons that contain items.
Two prerequisites matter here. License Plating is an add-on to Warehouse Insight rather than a standalone product, and picking to a license plate requires the Advanced edition of Warehouse Insight, since the Express edition does not support license plates. Establish that early, because it is an edition-level dependency rather than a configuration option.
Deciding What to Pick, Then Picking It
Between receiving and packing sits the question of what should ship today. Native Business Central does not answer that well, which is why the Order Fulfillment Worksheet exists: it evaluates what is genuinely available to pick, accounting for blocked or expired lots, bins that are not pickable, and stock that has not yet been put away, then allocates inventory across orders by date, carrier, customer, priority, or order value and creates the picks. It can run in the background so picks are generated continuously rather than in a morning batch.
Picking then happens on the handheld with Warehouse Insight, and license plate templates let a picker scan a template barcode at the start so the plate carries predefined dimensions. Items picked to that plate are recorded as they go on.
Arriving at the Packing Station
When the shipment opens in the Dynamic Ship Package Worksheet, lines that were picked and registered to a license plate appear as already packed, and lines that were not appear flagged for manual packing. The packer verifies, adds anything outstanding by scanning or by entering it, captures weight from a connected scale if one is in use, then rate shops, generates labels, and posts. One caution worth designing around: if the pick is registered in Business Central rather than on the handheld, or a step in the sequence is missed, packing simply proceeds without reference to the pick. Nothing breaks, but the benefit is quietly lost.
