Mobile Device Management for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central WMS
Deploying a fleet of Android warehouse scanners has traditionally meant IT staff touching every device: installing software, configuring settings, connecting to Business Central, and repeating the process for every scanner at every location. Warehouse Insight’s MDM integration with SureMDM eliminates that entirely. Scan one barcode and the device is fully configured: Warehouse Insight is installed, settings are applied, and the device is locked to the approved application. From that point forward, your entire scanner fleet is managed centrally over the air, without anyone touching a device.
At a Glance
- Scan a bin barcode to see all items, quantities, and lot or serial detail for that location in real time
- Devices can be shipped directly to any warehouse location and handed to a worker on day one, with no IT staff on-site required
- The central web-based console manages every device across every warehouse location from one place
- Kiosk lockdown, remote wipe, over-the-air app and OS updates, and real-time fleet monitoring included
Key Capabilities
Single-barcode device enrollment. Insight Works provides a single barcode during setup. Scanning it on a new or factory-reset Android device installs Warehouse Insight, applies all configuration settings, and connects the device to Business Central. No manual software installation, no per-device configuration steps, no IT staff required at the deployment site.
Ship-ready device deployment. For multi-location operations or growing fleets, devices can be pre-enrolled, fully configured, and shipped directly to any warehouse. Workers receive a device ready to scan upon arrival. This is particularly valuable for operations opening new locations or replacing aging hardware across multiple sites simultaneously.
Kiosk lockdown. SureMDM locks devices to administrator-approved applications, primarily Warehouse Insight and WMS Express. Workers use the device for its intended purpose. Unauthorized app installs, browser access, and settings changes are blocked at the device level.
Remote lock and wipe. If a device is lost or a worker leaves, IT can remotely lock, locate, or wipe it from the SureMDM console without physical access to the device. Business Central data and company information stay protected.
Over-the-air updates. Warehouse Insight app updates and Android OS patches can be pushed to the entire device fleet simultaneously from the SureMDM console. No manual installs, no version drift across locations, no scheduled IT visits to the warehouse floor.
Multi-location fleet management. All devices across every warehouse location are managed from a single web-based console. Different policies, app configurations, and user assignments can be applied per site without managing separate systems for each location.
Real-time device monitoring. The SureMDM console shows which devices are online, their current battery levels, installed app versions, and their last known device locations. IT teams can identify and resolve issues before they interrupt warehouse operations.
How MDM Works with Warehouse Insight
Warehouse Insight’s MDM integration runs through SureMDM. When a new Android scanner is ready for deployment, the IT staff scans the Insight Works enrollment barcode. SureMDM takes over from that point: it installs the Warehouse Insight application, applies the device configuration, enforces kiosk lockdown policies, and registers the device in the central console. The entire process takes minutes per device and requires no technical knowledge from the person holding the scanner.
Once enrolled, the device communicates with both Business Central and the SureMDM console. Business Central handles all warehouse workflow logic, inventory data, and transaction processing, as it does for every Warehouse Insight deployment. SureMDM handles device-level management: updates, security policies, monitoring, and remote actions. The two systems operate independently, so a SureMDM action such as pushing an OS update does not interfere with an active warehouse session.
SureMDM’s full device management capabilities require devices to be enrolled from a clean state, either new out of the box or factory reset. This is an Android platform requirement. For operations purchasing new hardware or refreshing an existing fleet, enrollment is seamless and automatic from the first scan.

Why MDM Changes the Deployment Conversation
Device deployment complexity is a common concern raised during WMS evaluations. The perception that deploying Warehouse Insight across a scanner fleet requires significant IT effort is one that MDM integration directly addresses. The single-barcode enrollment process brings Warehouse Insight’s deployment experience to the same level as any MDM-backed WMS solution: a barcode scan, a configured device, and a worker ready to scan.
For operations with multiple warehouse locations, the impact is most visible at scale. Without MDM, adding 10 devices across 3 locations requires coordinating IT resources at each site, scheduling installation visits, and manually managing configuration for each device. With SureMDM, those same ten devices can be pre-enrolled at a central location, shipped to each site in a box, and handed directly to workers. IT manages the entire fleet from the console without leaving the office.
The ongoing management capabilities matter as much as the initial deployment. A fleet that stays on a consistent app version, with security policies enforced and remote wipe available, does not create support incidents or security gaps as it scales.
Who Uses MDM with Warehouse Insight
IT managers and system administrators use SureMDM to manage the Warehouse Insight device fleet without requiring physical access to scanners after initial enrollment. Operations managers at multi-location businesses use it to standardize the scanner environment across all sites from one console. Warehouse managers benefit indirectly: devices arrive configured and ready, app updates happen without scheduled downtime, and device issues are resolved before they become operational problems. Microsoft Partners implementing Warehouse Insight use MDM enrollment as part of a streamlined deployment process, particularly for Quick Start implementations where getting devices into production quickly is a priority.

Frequently Asked Questions
Warehouse Insight supports mobile device management through SureMDM, available as an add-on for both Warehouse Insight and WMS Express. SureMDM provides centralized device enrollment, kiosk lockdown, remote management, over-the-air updates, and real-time fleet monitoring for Android warehouse scanners. It is compatible with Android-based barcode scanners and mobile computers from Honeywell, Zebra, Datalogic, and other leading manufacturers.
Insight Works provides an enrollment barcode during the MDM setup process. Scanning that barcode on a new or factory-reset Android device triggers SureMDM to install Warehouse Insight, apply all device configuration settings, enforce kiosk policies, and register the device in the central management console. No manual software installation or per-device configuration is required. The device is ready to connect to Business Central and begin scanning immediately after enrollment.
Yes. Devices can be enrolled and fully configured before shipping. Once a device has been enrolled via the barcode process, it is ready to use. Operations can purchase new hardware, enroll devices centrally, and ship them directly to any warehouse location. Workers receive a fully configured device and can begin using Warehouse Insight immediately, with no on-site IT staff required.
SureMDM’s full device management and enrollment capabilities require devices to be in a clean state: either new out of the box or factory reset. This is an Android platform requirement, not a SureMDM limitation. Existing devices that have been factory reset can be enrolled through the same barcode process. If you are unsure whether your current devices are compatible, contact Insight Works for an assessment.
After enrollment, SureMDM provides centralized management of the entire fleet from a single web-based console. Capabilities include pushing Warehouse Insight app updates and Android OS patches to all devices simultaneously, enforcing kiosk lockdown to restrict device use to approved applications, remotely locking or wiping devices that are lost or decommissioned, monitoring device status, including battery level and app version in real time, and applying different configuration policies per warehouse location.
