Insight Works Brings Professional Retail and In-Person Payments Fully Native to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

As Microsoft's Latest Business Central Release Doubles Down on Native Financial Tools, Counter Sales Extends That Same Philosophy to the Sales Counter

Insight Works, a developer of add-on applications for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, today reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating disconnected point-of-sale systems for trade desks, parts counters, and industrial retail operations with Counter Sales, a point-of-sale and trade-desk solution built directly into Business Central.

The reminder comes as Microsoft’s 2026 release wave 1 for Business Central continues to push more financial capability natively into the core product, including AI-assisted bank account reconciliation, expanded cash-flow forecasting, and deeper embedded reporting, all aimed at reducing the manual reconciliation and disconnected tools that have historically slowed finance teams down. That same problem has long existed one step earlier in the process, at the sales counter itself. Many organizations running Business Central still take trade-desk and counter payments through a separate system entirely, which creates manual reconciliation work, delayed visibility into cash flow, and duplicate data entry between the point-of-sale tool and the ledger.

Insight Works built Counter Sales to close that gap at the point of sale. The application adds order entry, barcode scanning, and payment processing directly inside Business Central, so a trade-desk or parts-counter transaction posts straight to the ledger without ever leaving the system. Split payments across cash, card, and other methods are supported per order, along with card-present, card-on-file, and virtual-terminal processing for phone and repeat orders. Deposits, including partial and full deposits with tax, apply cleanly to sales and return orders. At day’s end, dimensions-based cash register reconciliation posts directly to the general ledger, closing out the till without a separate reconciliation step.

Counter Sales also supports a shared-terminal, device-based license model, allowing multiple shift employees to work from one counter terminal without requiring a full Business Central user license for each person, an approach built for the realities of shift-based trade-desk and counter staffing.

Mark Hamblin, Senior Solutions Advisor at Insight Works, put it this way: “Business Central keeps adding native financial capability, but that only closes half the gap if the sale itself still happens outside the system. Counter Sales was built so the counter and the ledger are never disconnected in the first place. For anyone who wants to see this in practice, we cover it in detail in our webcasts, available at dmsiworks.com/webcasts.”
