Windows Mobile reached end of life years ago and has not received a software or security update in over a decade. In contrast, Android hardware keeps getting faster scan engines, better battery life, and ongoing manufacturer support. We announced the eventual end of support for Windows Mobile devices in our December 2024 newsletter and continued to maintain the scanner app for those devices in the meantime. Warehouse Insight version 3 is the release where that support ends and Android becomes the supported mobile scanning platform.
Warehouse Insight Version 3 Moves Scanning to Android: Save 10% When You Upgrade From Windows Mobile
Warehouse Insight v3 moves scanning in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central fully to Android, with hardware that offers faster scan engines, longer battery life, and manufacturers still actively building for it. As part of that move, the Insight Works scanner app is ending support for Windows Mobile devices (CE6, WEHH6.5, and WEC7). These operating systems reached end of life years ago. If your warehouse still runs one of these legacy handhelds, here is what changes, what keeps working, and how to save 10% on the Android hardware that replaces them.
What This Means for Your Warehouse
If you already scan on Android or Chrome OS devices, nothing changes for you. Warehouse Insight v3 continues to support Android 8 and higher.
If you still run Windows Mobile devices, your current v2.x scanner app will continue to work when connected to a Warehouse Insight v3 environment in Business Central. New Warehouse Insight v3 features, however, are being built for the Android scanner app, so you will not see the full benefit of the upgrade until you replace your hardware.
If you use the Windows Desktop Client, this change does not apply to you. The Windows Desktop Client, used on laptops, receiving-desk workstations, and forklift-mounted computers, is a separate platform from the Windows Mobile scanner app and continues to run on Windows 10 and 11. Warehouse Insight also offers a completely new native Windows Desktop Client for Windows 10 and 11, for improved usability and functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my existing Windows Mobile scanners stop working?
No. Your current v2.x scanner app will keep working when connected to a Warehouse Insight v3 environment in Business Central. New features in Warehouse Insight v3 will only be available for Android devices.
Does this affect the Windows Desktop Client on laptops or workstations?
No. The Windows Desktop Client is a different platform and remains supported on Windows 10 and 11. Warehouse Insight also offers a completely new native Windows Desktop Client for Windows 10 and 11, for improved usability and functionality.
What hardware is supported instead of Windows Mobile devices?
Devices running Android 8 and higher have been tested and confirmed to be fully supported from Brady (Honeywell), Datalogic, Zebra, Cipherlab, and Keyence. Other devices running Android 8 will support installation of the Warehouse Insight app but would need to be fully tested to confirm compatibility with all features.
